The author of Midnight's Children today made a valiant, if not doomed, attempt to plead for the avoidance of legislating against what is being denoted as 'religious hatred'.
Back in 1977, when I was still a snot-nosed toddler myself, Mary Whitehouse led a successful private prosecution under our antiquated blasphemy law against the Gay News for publishing this poem by James Kirkup.
It seems the Christian fundamentalists may have their day in court again soon, without recourse to any ill-conceived legislation.
